Lash extensions are a beauty investment and nothing is more frustrating than seeing your dollars fall down the drain. Literally.

Although priding myself in delivering exceptional retention, in the 16 years that I have been a professional lash artist, one of the most frequently asked questions I get is: "How can I make my lashes last longer between fills?"

If you've been struggling with lash retention issues, you're not alone. Let's break down the top five reasons lash extensions might not be lasting and how you (and your lash tech) can fix them.

1. Improper Aftercare

One of the most common causes of poor lash retention is improper aftercare. Cleansing your lashes daily is essential to remove oils, makeup and debris. Many clients are afraid to get their lashes wet due to outdated beliefs that this causes premature shedding, as this is what we were told when lash extensions first gained popularity in 2010 (and girl were we wrong). Now we know that NOT washing your lashes can lead to product build up and cause not only lash retention issues, but a plethora of other problems such as Blepharitis and lash mites.

Fix: Use a lash-safe foam cleanser with a fluffy lash cleanser brush. At Rove Beauty Brand, we provide each client with personalized after care instructions and supply a gentle, oil-free lash shampoo for best results.

2. Excessive Oil Production or Oil-Based Products

Natural oils or oil-based skincare can break down the lash bonds, causing lashes to slide off. This is especailly important for clients with naturally oily skin or those using heavy serums or creams near the eye area.

Fix:

Switch to oil-free products, especially around your eyes. Your White Rock lash artist can suggest lash-friendly skincare alternatives.

3.Touching or Sleeping on Lashes

Constantly rubbing your eyes, picking at your lashes, or sleeping face-down can cause premature lash loss. Even a little friction each night can add up over time.

Fix: Be mindful of your sleeping position (a silk pillowcase helps!), and avoid touching your lashes. Lash extensions should feel weightless-you shouldn't even notice they're there.

4.Lashes Not Applied Properly

Retention starts at the lash table. If lashes aren't isolated correctly, or the wrong adhesive or lash length is used, retention will suffer. Your lashes should never feel pokey or overly heavy.

Fix: Always go to a certified lashe artist in South Surrey, like us at Rove Beauty Brand, who customize your set based on your natural lash health and lifestyle.

5.Hormonal Changes or Seasonal Shedding

Sometimes, retnetion problems are out of your control. Hormonal changes (pregnancy, stress, medications) or seasonal lash shedding can cause more lashes to fall out than usual.

Fix: Keep your lash artist informed of any recent changes in your health, hormones, or skincare routine. We can adjust your lash fill schedule or use retention-boosting products like bonders and primers.
